Afrobasket – talent on display of a sleeping giant

When the best 16 nations will meet in Libya for the 25th edition of Afrobasket, the FIBA Africa Championship for Men, some of the most talented basketball players in the world will have again a chance to showcase their skills.

The African continent has long been known to produce incredible gifted and athletic players, who in many cases have made their way to the best leagues in the world including the NBA.

Once again, from 5 to 15 August, the top players from Africa will prove their talent in the cities of Benghazi and Tripoli.

A lot is at stake – the 16 nations do not only play for the highest honor in African basketball, they also play for the three African spots, that grant participation in the 2010 FIBA World Championship. The gold, silver and bronze medal winners of Afrobasket 2009 will book a ticket to the world’s greatest basketball event in Turkey next summer.

Competition will be as fierce as ever and the hunt for the dominating African team of the past decades will be open. Angola has won the last 5 consecutive championships and captured no less than 9 of the 24 African titles so far.

What will be the outcome? Nobody knows, except that many teams will be determined to stop this impressive series.
